Twitter has just updated its mobile web version

Twitter has just updated its mobile web version, mobile.twitter.com, the startup announced on its blog today. According to the post, the purpose of this update is to improve Twitter experience for users who access the platform from feature phones, low-bandwidth networks or older browsers.

Before today’s announcement, these users were unable to see the redesigned version of Twitter, which the company introduced last December. Thanks to this new mobile version, feature phone owners will now be able to see the Discover and Me tabs, as per Twitter’s screenshot of a Nokia phone:

It is also worth noting that today’s changes are deeper than they may look; according to Twitter, the new interface “uses one-third less bandwidth than the previous iteration.”

As you can imagine, the purpose of this new version is to cater to global audiences, especially in emerging countries where smartphones are still far from common. Says Twitter’s VP of Product Satya Patel: “We will continue to make Twitter the most accessible way to connect with the world, even with the weakest signals and the simplest devices.”

Apple App Store reaches 10 billion downloads

Apple App Store within its three years journey reached its goal of 10 billion downloads. The store launched in July 2008 with just 500 apps and now touts the availability of more than 350,000 free and paid apps for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. Growth of the store’s popularity has been swift; in its first nine months, the store hit 1 billion downloads and followed that up with 5 billion downloads in June 2010.

The App Store has been such a resounding success for mobile computing that Apple’s competitors have been forced to launch similar ventures. Google, Microsoft, Research In Motion, Nokia, and Samsung all offer apps through their own app storefronts.

But the venture has not been without controversy. Early on, Apple’s app approval process often frustrated developers, who were sometimes left in the dark about the reason an app was rejected. But Apple recently announced plans to publish its App Store Review Guidelines and to allow developers to create applications with just about any tool they want.

Using Your Blackberry In Illinois Could Send You To Prison

This is one of those technology and legal stories that is hard to believe in this day and age. If you are in Illinois, you better be careful where you point your cameraphone or voice recorder. Chris Drew, a Chicago artist, and Tiawanda Moore, a former stripper, are facing up to 15 years in prison for eavesdropping, according to a story in the Chicago News Cooperative. Drew used an Olympus voice recorder to commit his crime and Moore used her Blackberry.

Moore is scheduled to go on trial early next month for recording Internal Affairs investigators when she filed a sexual harassment complaint. Moore claims the investigators tried to get her to drop her complaint, so she took out her Blackberry and started a recording which resulted in her arrest. Drew goes on trial in April for recording his conversation with Chicago police officers, without their permission, when he was arrested for selling art without a permit. It’s just a misdemeanor to sell art with no permit, but the voice recorder is causing much bigger problems.

Both are being charged under the rarely enforced The Illinois Eavesdropping Act, which makes it illegal to audio-record either private or public conversations without the consent of all parties. Illinois is one of 12 states with “two-party consent” eavesdropping laws on the books.

A challenge to the law failed earlier this month when a US District Judge ruled there is no “right to audio record,” claiming it would be “an unprecedented expansion of the First Amendment.” That’s saying there is freedom of speech, but even in public, there isn’t freedom to record. That may come as a shock to millions of iPhone, Android, and Blackberry users.

Here’s the kicker, which got both Drew and Moore in deeper trouble, according to the story. Audio recording a civilian in Illinois is a felony with up to 3 years in prison the first time you do it and up to 5 years if you do it again. But the penalties are much stiffer if you record certain people.

Audio-recording a law-enforcement officer, state’s attorney, assistant state’s attorney, attorney general, assistant attorney general or judge in the performance of his or her duties is a Class 1 felony, punishable by up to 15 years in prison.

Most states have an exception for civilians recording police conversations in public. But not Illinois.

There is an exception in Illinois that allows law-enforcement officers to legally record civilians in private or public. But, not the other way around.

Nowadays, nearly everyone is carrying around a camera and phone capable of making audio recordings. As Adam Schwartz, an ACLU lawyer who has challenged the law pointed out, when “something fishy seems to be going on, the perfectly natural and healthy and good thing is for them to pull that device out and make a recording.” You might think twice about making that recording if you are in Illinois.

If you find yourself out of the coverage area of your mobile; network and there is an emergency, dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing network to establish the emergency number for you, and interestingly this number 112 can be dialed even if the keypad is locked. Try it out.

Also in Australia , the Australian emergency number 000 can be dialled whilst your mobile phone keyboard is locked. This is another reason why 000 receives so many false emergency calls!

2. Have you locked your keys in the car?

Does your car have remote keyless entry? This may come in handy someday. Good reason to own a cell phone: If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are at home, call someone at home on their mobile phone from your cell phone.

Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the person at your home press the unlock button, holding it near the mobile phone on their end. Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you. Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other "remote" for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk).

Imagine your mobile battery is very low. To activate, press the keys *3370# Your mobile will restart with this reserve and the instrument will show a 50% increase in battery. This reserve will get charged when you charge your mobile next time.

4. How to disable a STOLEN mobile phone?

To check your Mobile phone's serial number, key in the following digits on your phone!:

A 15 digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to your handset. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe. When your phone get stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They will then be able to block your handset so even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally useless. You probably won't get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever stole it can't use/sell it either. If everybody does this, there would be no point in people stealing mobile phones.

Not only the above, but also in Australia your stolen phone is added to a "Stolen Mobile Phone" database, so if your phone is found later on it can be returned to you.

Opera Mini Had 76.3 Million Users In October, Up 92 Percent From Last Year

Opera’s mobile browser, Opera Mini has had a big year. It’s iPhone app was approved, saw one million downloads in the first day and since the mobile browser has been growing like gangbusters. Today, Opera released its state of the mobile report showing that Opera is continuing to grow in terms of usage.
In October, Opera Mini had over 76.3 million users, a 7.1% increase from September 2010 and more than 92% compared to October 2009. Opera Mini users viewed over 41.6 billion pages in October 2010, which is an increase of 142% since last October.
In the past month, Opera Mini users generated over 616 million MB of data for operators worldwide. Since September, the data consumed went up by 15.1% and dat traffic is up 134% since last year. Data in Opera Mini is compressed up to 90%. If this data were uncompressed, Opera Mini users would have viewed over 5.7 petabytes of data in October.
The report also took a look at usage in the countries in the Commonwealth of Independent States including Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Uzbekistan, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan. From October 2009 to October 2010, page views in these countries increased by 128%, unique users increased by 44% and data transferred increased by 119%. The most popular sites include Vkontakte, Yandex, Odnoklassniki.ru, Google, and Mail.ru.
Another interesting data point in the report related to a survey of how Gen Y users are interacting with their mobile phones. Almost 90% of respondents in the United States aged 18-27 have used their phones to share pictures. Respondents in the U.S. were least likely to have asked someone out on a date via SMS (44%). Respondents in China (84%), Germany (84%) and Vietnam (83%) are most likely to have used SMS texts to ask someone out on a date.
Opera reports that 53% of respondents in the United States and 57% of respondents in China rarely or never read physical newspapers. And 44% of U.S. respondents were somewhat to very uncomfortable sharing their personal information online.

Nokia: 3 million apps downloaded from Ovi Store every day.

Big numbers coming out of Nokia land this morning. The company says its application store Ovi Store continues to gain traction, this week reaching the 3 million downloads per day milestone, up from 1 million downloads per day in the beginning of this year and 2.3 million downloads per day last month.

In addition, Nokia revealed that the total number of users of Ovi now exceeds 165 million people across more than 190 countries. Furthermore, Nokia says it is adding some 250,000 new Ovi users on a daily basis, which means roughly 7.5 million new users per month.

Nokia adds that 90 percent of visits to the Ovi Store effectively lead to an app download, and that each registered visitor downloads 2.6 apps on average. At present, 92 developers have reached the 1-million+ download milestone each for their apps, and Nokia says that number will grow to 100 by next week.

A bit of a surprise with regards to the most popular app on the Ovi Store worldwide: Rovio’s Angry Birds is number two, trailing Q Torch (made by India’s CellApp technology). Nevertheless, Angry Birds is the top-selling paid app.

Nokia also touts the popularity of its Qt SDK, which it says has been downloaded more than 1.5 million times this year alone, while 400,000 new developers are said to have signed up with Forum Nokia over the last year.

Recently, Nokia said it will focus solely on the Qt framework framework and support for HTML5 in an effort to ensure that apps will continue to be compatible with future evolutions of Symbian as well as upcoming MeeGo products.
