The Avengers was a masterpiece of comic book cinema, one of the most enjoyable and well-written superhero movies I’ve ever seen – ranking up there with The Dark Knight and The Incredibles in terms of smart, engaging superhero stories. In terms of sheer spectacle, it outdoes just about every other comic book film, but it takes that spectacle and weaves it together with a strong script and excellent performances.
The conflict between the heroes is what makes the film work so well.
The film grossed $207.4 million over its opening weekend, and may top $1 billion in less than three weeks after opening night. The all-time global box-office champion is still Avatar with a total of $2.7 billion, and it seems unlikely Avengers can top that, though it may well pass up the final Harry Potter film and its worldwide $1.3 billion.
Some reviewers have panned the movie, however, saying too many stars and too many superheroes bog the film down. But this is wrong-headed. It’s the very fact that so many heroes band together – and clash against one another – that gives this is movie its charm.
“Marvel’s The Avengers is the best comic book movie yet,” writes Ethan Gach at The League of Ordinary Gentlemen. “The story is useless but the narrative barrels forward over plots holes and motivational voids with reassuring gusto. Instead, it’s the unlikely charisma of the superhero ensemble that forces the project to succeed despite itself. Like the self-perpetuating, unlimited energy source at the story’s Swiss cheese center, the Avengers propel themselves forward on an attractive primal blend of superpower, comic genius, and force of will.”
Force of will indeed. As Alyssa Rosenberg notes, the movie’s true conflict occurs not between the villains and the superheroes, but between the ensemble of heroes themselves:
“In The Avengers, the battle of ideas isn’t between the forces of good and evil: it’s between the people who are supposed to be allies,” she writes. “Captain America thinks Iron Man’s a showboat, while Tony thinks Steve is a hopeless square. They waste time tangling with Thor in a forest before recognizing their common aims. Once they do, those three men plus Dr. Banner, find themselves suspicious of a secret S.H.I.E.L.D. agenda they uncover in the course of gearing up to fight Loki. And Fury manipulates them into coming together as a team even as he tries to hold off the worst impulses of the S.H.I.E.L.D. council he must answer to.”
However much like a big summer blockbuster The Avengers may feel, it takes the formula much deeper and much further than most superhero movies dare to go. Indeed, in spite of its light touch, The Avengers was a much more intriguing film than James Cameron’s Avatar which kept bumping its head on its many tropes and cliches, and got so bogged down in lack of self-awareness that it became almost unwatchable despite its loveliness.
The Avengers is a much smarter, more interesting film than many of its peers, and it manages this without going to the dark side . As Alyssa notes, it’s largely a film about superheroes who will stand up not just to the bad guys, but to the worst impulses of our own government. It’s everything that Captain America wasn’t: a smart, subtle, and funny critique of the bad things that good people, and ostensibly good governments, are willing to do in the name of security.
This, and Whedon’s engaging dialogue, are what really made this film tick. If the heroes had simply joined up and fought happily alongside one another, who would have cared? But the wayward Avengers clash, and they don’t stop at words. Whatever friendship is built upon the back of crisis at the end of the film is tenuous at best. There’s room for these friendships to be challenged again in future films.
Fortunately for fans, it looks like we have plenty more Avengers movies to look forward to: Samuel L. Jackson’s contract ties him to nine films in the franchise, and Mark Ruffalo is signed on to no fewer than six appearances as The Hulk – even if both actors only show up in cameo appearances. Not to mention The Avengers ended on a blatant cliffhanger.
There’s lots more room to explore in The Avengers universe, and characters like Bruce Banner who stole the show and need more room to grow. A sequel to Captain America could fix many of the first film’s problems as well. Whatever comes next, it’s a good time to be a superhero fan.
Country singer Mindy McCready and her son Zander, 5, have been found.
The two were hiding in a closet in Heber Springs, Arkansas, when authorities found them on Saturday, says CNN.com. "The child appeared to be in good condition when we found him ... he was in the closet with his mother," David Rahbany, the chief deputy U.S. Marshal in eastern Arkansas, told the news network.
It's hard to believe that Britney Spears, who broke out as a 17-year-old fresh-faced teenager, just turned 30. And the mom of two spent her birthday ice-skating in Houston with boyfriend Jason Trawick, says People.com.
Beyonce Knowles, meanwhile, told interviewer Katie Couric that her pregnancy cravings have been totally normal. "I was on a plane and the flight attendant came and was like, 'I have your hot sauce and pickles and bananas,' " she said, according to THR.com. "And I'm like, 'That is absolutely disgusting, what are you doing?' He's like, 'I read it on the Internet.' "

Lindsay Lohan is to earn almost $1 million for posing naked in a cover spread for ‘Playboy’ magazine.
The troubled actress - who was last week told she had to clean morgues for 16 hours a week as part of a court order until a probation hearing on November 2 - will reportedly earn almost $1 million for baring all in the adult magazine.
According to TMZ.com, the 25-year-old star originally turned down a $750,000 offer from ‘Playboy’ boss Hugh Hefner to pose nude, demanding that the figure should be closer to $1 million.
It is believed the shoot started over the weekend, with Lindsay - who could face up to 18 months in prison if she is found guilty of violating the terms of her probation for a 2007 DUI (driving under the influence) conviction - having to fit it in around her court-ordered morgue duties.
However, this isn’t the first time the star has posed naked.
Some of the most popular articles in gossip magazines such as Star Magazine and the National Enquirer are those that probe into the private relationships of celebrities. Such magazines like to detail the latest hook ups, and break ups. Though those in Hollywood are known for the brevity in their relationships, there are just some female celebs that just seem to have great trouble both snagging and keeping a man. It just goes to how you that looks do not account for everything.
Naomi Campbell
Famous since the catwalking days of fellow supermodels Cindy Crawford and Linda Evangelista, this dark beauty cannot seem to keep an assistant or a personal companion. Campbell is known for her erratic temper and penchant for throwing cell phones and the like at those who raise her ire. She has been linked to such notable men as the prince of Dubai, Michael Stipe, with whom she was engaged, singer Usher, and actor Robert Deniro to name a few. However, a longer term commitment has eluded her and Campbell has never been linked to anyone for very long. The last reported hook up with Terrance Howard was unceremoniously denied by the actor who has proclaimed to still be in love with his ex wife.
Mariah Carey
This angelic voice burst onto the scene with the smash hit Vision of Love, which is ironic since love has seemed to elude the song bird. Carey was married to record executive Tommy Mottola, a man quite a few years older than her. The marriage did not outlive the hype of the fairy tale wedding as Mottola turned out to be more like a father and a husband and the two called it quite after a rather tumultuous union.
Carey has gone on to date others such as Latin American singer Luis Miguel, and notorious playboy Derek Jeter. She has also been linked to rapper Eminem, with whom she had a very public feud. Reportedly, Carey was leaving messages for the rapper who was apparently no longer interested in pursuing any romantic involvement with the singer. He released them to the media, and Carey labeled the messages as being misconstrued, and Eminem as being ungentlemanly for releasing the messages.
Carey is legendary for diva like behavior and demands. She has quite a bit of experience in many things, I wonder how long it will take for her to realize that men do not always want the high maintenance type no matter what your bank balance.
Paris Hilton
With Paris, one never knows if she cannot seem to keep a man or if a man cannot keep her. Though the difference between Hilton, and our two other ladies is that she is young and she just wants to have fun. Though shortly engaged to Paris Latsis, Hilton has been linked to just about everyone in young Hollywood, whether they are attached or not. Sometime boyfriend Stavros Niarchos is a boyfriend she snagged while he dated one of the Olsen twins, has the infamous sex tape with Shannen Doherty ex Rick Solomon, not to mention the very married MTV reality star Travis Barker.
No one knows what the future holds for these ladies, but I am guessing that life is easier in Tinseltown when you have someone to share it with.
It was really only a matter of time, but it looks like a movie about WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is officially in the works. According to Variety, the suspenseful "thriller" will be based on Andrew Fowler's forthcoming biography of Assange, 'The Most Dangerous Man in the World.' Michelle Krumm will produce the biopic, alongside Barry Josephson, whose production credits include TV's 'Bones.' No word yet on who will play Assange, but expect plenty of speculation leading up to the announcement. For what it's worth, Gawker has Leonardo DiCaprio as its unofficial front-runner, but Tilda Swinton seems to be a strong dark horse.
