Nephew of the State minister of Bangladesh killed in bomb attack

Dhaka, Dec 29 (bdnews24.com) – A leader of Awami Swechchha Sebak League was killed in a bomb attack by assailants in the city's Badda on Thursday, police said.

Mamunur Rashid, 32, was the vice-president of Ward 1 of Merul-Badda unit of the volunteer wing of the ruling Awami League and nephew of state minister for water resources Mahabubur Rahman.

According to his family, Mamun came under attack around 11am in front of Merul-Badda Anandanagr Social Welfare office

The deceased's brother, 'Sumon' told journalists at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) that around 11am, hearing sound of bomb blast and gunfire, they rushed to the social welfare office where they found Mamun seriously wounded and profusely bleeding.

They took him to Badda General Hospital and from there to DMCH where doctors declared him dead.

"Locally influential Jahangir and Alamgir carried out the killing over a dispute over dredger business with Mamun," Sumon alleged.

He also alleged that around four days ago, Mamun had received a death threat.

"Mamun was killed in a cocktail (homemade bomb) blast," officer in charge (OC) of Badda Police Station Mahbubur Rahman told bdnews24.com.

Asked if the assailants had fired from their guns, he said it appears that the act of killing was executed through explosion of Molotov cocktail.

No-one else was injured in the attack, he added.

Police suspect the killing was an act of long-running hostility.

Mamun's friend Jasim said Mamun had hostile relations with some of the locally influential people and believes the murder had something to do with that.
