DHAKA: Airtel mobile customers in Bangladesh can now easily pull information from Wikipedia via SMS and access content without the need of activating mobile internet.
Bharti Airtel, a leading global telecommunications company, Tuesday announced the launch of the first-ever SMS-based access to Wikipedia content for customers in Bangladesh.
With the facility, a total of 50 lakh-plus Airtel mobile customers will be the first in the country to leverage this unique service and easily search anything on Wikipedia via SMS without the need of subscribing to mobile internet or GPRS services, says a press release.
Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Airtel Bangladesh Ltd Chris Tobit said, “Information is the most powerful tool in today’s world. With the launch of a first-of-its-kind SMS-based access to Wikipedia for customers in Bangladesh, we are delighted to bring easy and 24x7 access to information at the fingertips of 5-million-plus Airtel mobile customers in the country.
He added: “We will continue to deliver service innovations that will help us move closer to our commitment of providing life enriching experience for Airtel mobile customers.”
The news release said to access any information on Wikipedia or conduct a simple Wikipedia search-all customers have to do is to type “wiki” and SMS that to 5353, upon which, they will receive an SMS response with material pulled from Wikipedia.
For example, by sending “wikiDhaka” to 5353, Airtel mobile customers will receive a 300-character-long SMS reply with facts on Dhaka gathered from Wikipedia. For every request, 2Tk/SMS charge applicable, it added.
