In Bangladesh, BNP, Jamaat call 48-hr hartal from July 6

DHAKA: Opposition BNP and its main ally Jammat-e-Islami Sunday called a nonstop 48-hour hartal from 6:00am on July 6 to 6:00am on July 8 to press for cancelling the constitutional amendment passed in parliament recently despite their boycott of the government move.

BNP Acting Secretary-General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Jamaat Acting Secretary -General ATM Azharul Islam announced the programme from separate press conferences held at respective party offices in the city.

Earlier on Saturday night, top leaders of the four-party alliance led by BNP and like-minded parties in an emergency meeting with BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia decided to launch simultaneous movement with tougher action programmes against the government.

Khelafat Mazlish Chairman and former minister Muhammad Ishak, Secretary-general Professor Dr Abdul Quader, assistant secretary-general of Jamaat Dr Shafiqur Rahman, Dhaka City Amir of Jamaat Maulana Rafiqul Islam Khan and Jatiya Party (BJP) Chairman Andalib Rahman Partha along with Jamaat Acting Secretary General ATM Azharul Islam were among others present at Saturday’s meeting.

Like-minded parties’ leaders—JAGPA president Shafiul Alam Prodhan, NAP chairman Jebel Rahman Gani, NDP President Khandaker Golam Murtaza and National People’s Party Chairman Sheikh Sawkat Hossain Nilu—also attended the meeting.

The combined opposition took the move against the backdrop of the 15th constitutional amendment that restored the 1972 constitution in a modified state, scrapping the provision for pre-election caretaker government and making the arrangement for holding polls under interim party government.
