DHAKA: A court Wednesday sentenced a Jahangirnagar University teacher Muhammad Ruhul Amin Khandaker to six months imprisonment for desiring death of the Prime Minister on Facebook.
A High Court bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury and Justice Jahangir Hossain Selim passed the order.
It also ordered police and the foreign ministry to bring back the teacher from Australia, where he is now on an education leave.Earlier on December 12, the High Court issued a contempt of court rule against him for not appearing in the court in person on October 17 despite August 25 court order.
Deputy Attorney General ABM Altaf Hossain told the journalists, “The Jahangirnagar University teacher had desired the death of the Prime Minister on his facebook status and also gave life threat to the Prime Minister and her family members.”
He added, “In spite of three repeated orders of the court he didn’t respond.
“According to the order, court sentenced him to six months’ rigorous imprisonment in jail and also directed Inspector General of Police to arrest him,” said ABM Altaf Hossain.
Altaf Hossain said, “The court also ordered the Jahangirnagar University authority to take needful measures against him regarding the matter.”
Earlier on August 13, Ruhul wrote in his Facebook status ‘Wishing PM’s death’ after the death of five people including filmmaker Tareque Masud and Ashfaque (Mishuk) Munier in a road accident on Aug 13.
Later on August 18, the court passed the rule in response to a report published on a a national daily regarding the matter.
JU Institute of Information Technology teacher Ruhul was appointed temporarily in 2008, and he is availing education leave in Australia since 2009.
May be it is going to be another way of Internet Censorship. It means nobody can share their thoughts through Social Media like Facebook, Twitter, Google+ etc. and if you write anything against your government in this Social Media, you will get punishment because of it. Is it the way to make Bangladesh Digital? No, My sense says it hampers Our internet users to share their own thoughts. Why our government isn't giving us a National Status Book of Bangladesh? Here we will find more than 1000 status, when we have to share what status their will be marked it with proper dated! Isn't it a easy way to make Bangladesh Digital Governments own way. Then one day Facebook will change their words by "What's on Government's mind?" from ''What's on your mind''
