The BNP has extended its support to a 30-hour countrywide shutdown which 12 mostly Islamist parties plan to enforce from 6:00 am tomorrow (Sunday), reports bdnews24.com.
Its key ally Jamaat-e-Islami has also backed the strike.
BNP's acting secretary-general Mirza Fakhrul Islam at a briefing at the Naya Paltan headquarters Friday afternoon announced the decision. Jamaat acting secretary general A T M Azharul Islam spoke at its Moghbazar headquarters.
The opposition parties organised the briefings to announce the next course of their action programmes after their 48-hour lockdown ended at 6:00 am on the day.
BNP and its allies enforced the hartal from 6:00 am Wednesday, demanding reinstatement of the caretaker system and an end to 'public sufferings'.
The 12 political parties on June 30 had called the countrywide general strike to protest removal of 'Absolute Faith and Trust in Allah' from the constitution.
They also demanded a halt to implementation of the national education and women's development policies.
The parties are Khelafat-e-Majlish, Islami Andolon Bangladesh (IAB), Bangladesh Khelafat Andolon, Sammilito Olama Mashayekh Parishad, National Democratic Party, Islami Oikya Andolon, Bangladesh Muslim League, Bangladesh NAP, NAP Bhasani, Jatiya Ganatantrik Party, Islamic Party and Nezame Islami Party.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been critical of the planned lockdown.
On Thursday, she told parliament, "They [the opposition parties] called hartal saying that Allah's name has been removed. Will they be able to find Allah's name in hartal if not in Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim?
"Allah stays in hearts. What will be the outcome of hartal if they cannot find Allah in their hearts?
"Rights to all the religions have been ensured in the constitution," she added.
