More than a few analysts say that the process is absurd, and agreed that it is a way of discrediting Assange publicly, given that there is no legal way to put him on trial for posting secret documents on WikiLeaks, something that several U.S. senators have been attempting.
Even Democrat Joseph Lieberman is leading the charge, with a bill to bring charges against anybody who publishes the name of a U.S. intelligence source.Leaking information is already considered a crime, so the new law directly targets those who leak the information.
Lieberman said the law would help to hold criminally responsible those who endanger these sources of information, which he called vital to protecting U.S. national security interests.
The bill has been dubbed the SHIELD Act, and would be an amendment to the Espionage Act, which prohibits the release of U.S. classified information. It also provides for revealing the identity of informants and their activities.
Even if the law is passed, it would not apply to WikiLeaks, given that it would not be retroactive. Also, neither the website nor its administrators are U.S. citizens.
Nevertheless, Canadian analyst Jean-Guy Allard said in an interview with Telesur television that the process that Assange faces is a set-up.
The AustralianĂ¢’s publications have ruined the credibility of U.S. diplomacy, and have revealed the true purpose of U.S. intelligence services, based on collecting information to be used for destabilizing purposes, Allard said.
The missing piece in the puzzle of the accusations against Assange is the question of who are the women accusing him, and what do they do, details omitted generally by the mass media.
One of the women is Ana Ardin, a Cuban who is very active in campaigns to slander the Caribbean island. She lives in Sweden and owns a club where people go to have whatever kind of relations they want.
Ardin and her friend Sofia Tilden are accusing Assange of having sexual relations without a condom, among other details, which Swedish law defines as a sexual crime.
Allard said Ardin is linked to Carlos Alberto Montaner, a fugitive of Cuban justice who works for the CIA.
The preventive imprisonment of Assange is nothing more than the first step in the siege that is closing around him, a man now described as public enemy No. 1.
